anchor As the anchor is an aid to mariners in danger of shipwreck, it was often used as a symbol of hope by early Christians. It was inscribed on the tomb of St. Philomena a thirteen year old martyr killed during the third century. Her remains were found within the Catacombs of Pricilla in Rome on May 24, 1802. |
fish
(Greek: icthus, fish) The fish was a secret symbol among Christians during the Jewish and Roman persecutions. In the Book of Tobit the hero Tobiah is attacked by a fish as he bathes in the River Tigris. The Archangel Raphael orders him to seize the fish and to remove its gall, heart & liver because they make for "useful medicines." |
