anchor
(Greek: ankyra, hook)

As the anchor is an aid to mariners in danger of shipwreck, it was often used as

a symbol of hope by early Christians. It was inscribed on the tomb of St. Philomena a thirteen year old martyr killed during the third century. Her remains were found within the Catacombs of Pricilla in Rome on May 24, 1802.

fish
(Greek: icthus,
fish)

The fish was a secret symbol among Christians during the Jewish and Roman

persecutions. In the Book of Tobit the hero Tobiah is attacked by a fish as he bathes in the River Tigris. The Archangel Raphael orders him to seize the fish and to remove its gall, heart & liver because they make for "useful medicines."

Part VIII: Changes wrought by the New Spirit!

Brett Curtis Weber, Ph.D. is an artist & neuroscientist who currently lives in Allentown, PA USA
& who is a member of the
National Arts Program & National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
His work is shown in galleries internationally & can be seen on  this website which hosts
over 300 artists worldwide who support us in our fight against MS. Brett is a member on
the board of directors at the Da Vinci Art Alliance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania & works
towards expanding the creative & healing potential of all human beings through art.

Brett has a special devotion to the Archangel Raphael (Hebrew for "God has healed") who has
interceded for him in many ways. This statue of Raphael is a reproduction of an original made
in 1500A.D.. The original is in the L.A. County Museum of Art, Los Angeles. Brett believes that
he spoke to an angel named Raphael in Medugorje. She came to him as a young girl and
asked him to pray for her. She told him that she would pray for him. Although she did not
appear with wings and flowing garments, the young girl closely resembled this statue.

Blue Cross Apparition Hill - Medugorje - September 6, 2003

Brett's first devotion is to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace. Our Lady of Medugorje is especially
close to him as he has been to Medugorje with his family and has been blessed with many graces.
This photograph of Our Lady's statue on Apparition Hill was a wonderful surprise. Our Lady asks us all
to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays. This prayer by Father Slavko was written to help us along. The
best fast is bread and water, but you may also choose to fast in other ways. In addition to Our
Lady of Medugorje, Brett has other special devotions to Our Lady. Three you might take up?

Fasting on Bread & Water with Friends & Family - Medugorje - September 5, 2003

Dear Father, Today I decide to fast. I decide for fasting
because your prophets used to fast, because Jesus Christ
fasted and so did His apostles and disciples. I decide for
fasting today because your servant, Mother Mary, fasted too.
She called me to fast when she said: "Dear Children: Today,
I invite you to start fasting with the heart. There are alot
of people who fast because others do so. Fasting is a habit
nobody wants to give up. I ask the parish to fast out of
gratitude that God has allowed me to stay in this parish so
long. Dear Children, fast and pray with the heart! Thank you
for having responded to my call" (9/20/84) So Father, I present
this day of fasting to you. through fasting I want to listen
to and live your word more. I want to learn to be turned more
toward you in spite of all the things that surround me. I want
to fast for all who are hungry. I want to fast for Peace in
the world. I want to fast for the conversion of sinners. To
fast to be able to see Jesus in and all around me. I want
to fast to be able to understand the value of Heavenly bread.
Grant me the grace that through fasting, my desire for you
will grow and that my heart may long for you. Grant me the
grace that through fasting I will become humble and willing
to do Your will. Cleans me dear Father of my selfishness.
Cleans me of my bad habits and let Your virtues increase in
me. Let the depths of my soul open to your grace through this
fast today so that you will totally affect me and cleanse me.
Help me to be like your Son in resisting every trial and
temptation. Dear Mary, obtain by prayer the grace of a joyful
fast for us today. Obtain by prayer the grace for me that my
decision to fast may be firm and lasting. We offer, for all
people, the difficulties and the hunger that we are going to
feel today. Mary, pray for us. Let every evil and temptation
keep away from us today through your intercession and through
the power of your intercession and protection. Teach us Mary,
to fast and to pray that day after day, we may become more and
more like you and your Son, Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Visit Saint Philomena's Shrine in Mugnano del Cardinale, Italia, & the two priests
from her first church in Pittsburgh, St. John Neumann and Blessed Francis Seelos.

Brett also has a special devotion to St. Philomena. At the time he wrote the
above article, he lived in Pittsburgh, PA and had routinely, but unknowingly, walked
his dog "Sophia" past the location where St. Philomena's first church in the United States
had stood over a century before (pictured below). Brett had also unknowingly lived near
St. Philomena's second church in the United States, which now is also gone (formerly
located in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh). It was not until the above relic came into his life
that he learned about her churches in Pittsburgh. He feels that she has always
been very close to him, and has helped him in times of trouble.

--

St. Philomena Church was founded in 1839, the first German ethnic parish in the diocese of
Pittsburgh. The church was first located in the Strip District of Pittsburgh. Among the
priests who served at St. Philomena were St. John Neumann and Blessed Francis Seelos. The
cornerstone of the church was laid on May 26, 1842 and the completed church was dedicated
on October 4, 1846. Due to the growing commercialization of the Strip District over time,
the parish was no longer viable in its original location. On April 15, 1922, the church was
sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad. The last Mass held in St. Philomena in the Strip District was
on November 16, 1925. St. Philomena Church was then relocated in the Squirrel Hill section
of Pittsburgh. The first Mass was held in the new St. Philomena Church occurred on June 4,
1922. The church served the community for 70 years, but eventually, population loss in the
city led to the closing of the parish. As part of the Diocesan reorganization and revitalization,
St. Philomena closed in 1993 and the church was sold shortly afterwards.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, the heart of
the Virgin Mary that was pierced by the
sword teaches us to "learn Christ," to
be conformed to him and to pray to him.
She guides us to proclaim his love; those
who carry the cross with Jesus also offer
an eloquent witness to those who are unable
to believe or to hope. In this year, troubled
by such great anxiety for the future of
humanity, I wished the prayer of the Rosary
to have as specific intentions the cause of
peace and of the family. Dear sick brothers
and sisters, you are "on the front line" to
intercede for these two great designs. May
your life, marked by trial, instil in everyone
that hope and serenity which can only be
experienced in meeting Christ. Let us entrust
this hope and all our special intentions to
Mary Immaculate, Health of the Sick.

To God Alone, by Christ Wisdom,
In the Spirit, in communion with Mary,
For the reign of God.

Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort (1673-1716)

Psalm 18

Prayer For Deliverance From My Enemies ~

I Called Upon the LORD

1 I love you, O LORD, my strength.
2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my rock in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
so I shall be saved from my enemies.

I Cried Out from Deep Waters

4 The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of perdition assailed me;
5 the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.
6 In my distress I called upon the LORD;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.

My Savior Answered Me

7 Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations also of the mountains trembled
and quaked, because he was angry.
8 Smoke went up from his nostrils,
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9 He bowed the heavens, and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.
10 He rode on a cherub, and flew;
he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering around him,
his canopy thick clouds dark with water.
12 Out of the brightness before him
there broke through his clouds
hailstones and coals of fire.
13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice.
14 And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them;
he flashed forth lightnings, and routed them.
15 Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O LORD,
at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

He Drew Me Out of Deep Waters

16 He reached down from on high, he took me;
he drew me out of mighty waters.
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy,
and from those who hated me;
for they were too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity;
but the LORD was my support.

I Was Blameless Before Him,

19 He brought me out into a broad place;
he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
20 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD,
and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all his ordinances were before me,
and his statutes I did not put away from me.
23 I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from guilt.
24 Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25 With the loyal you show yourself loyal;
with the blameless you show yourself blameless;
26 with the pure you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you show yourself perverse.
27 For you deliver a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 It is you who light my lamp;
the LORD, my God, lights up my darkness.
29 By you I can crush a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.

He Trained My Hands For War

30 This God--his way is perfect;
the promise of the LORD proves true;
he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God except the LORD?
And who is a rock besides our God?--
32 the God who girded me with strength,
and made my way safe.
33 He made my feet like the feet of a deer,
and set me secure on the heights.
34 He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand has supported me;
your helpb has made me great.

I Destroyed My Foes

36 You gave me a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
and did not turn back until they were consumed.
38 I struck them down, so that they were not able to rise;
they fell under my feet.
39 For you girded me with strength for the battle;
you made my assailants sink under me.
40 You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
and those who hated me I destroyed.
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them;
they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them.
42 I beat them fine, like dust before the wind;
I cast them out like the mire of the streets.

Blessed Be My Rock

43 You delivered me from strife with the peoples;
you made me head of the nations;
people whom I had not known served me.
44 As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
foreigners came cringing to me.
45 Foreigners lost heart,
and came trembling out of their strongholds.
46 The LORD lives! Blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation,
47 the God who gave me vengeance
and subdued peoples under me;
48 who delivered me from my enemies;
indeed, you exalted me above my adversaries;
you delivered me from the violent.
49 For this I will extol you, O LORD, among the nations,
and sing praises to your name.
50 Great triumphs he gives to his king,
and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
to David and his descendants forever.

An English Soldier in the Midst of battle
shouted to his friend: If you're wounded, it's
blighty; if you're killed, it's the Resurrection."
In any case, do your duty and accept God's Will.

Prayer Before an Attack

It ain't as I 'opes 'E'll keep me safe
While the other blokes goes down,
It ain't as I wants to leave this world
And wear an 'ero's crown.
It ain't for that as I say my prayers
When I goes to the attack,
But I pray that whatever comes my way
I may never turn my back.
I leave the matter o' life and death
To the Father who knows what's best,
And I pray that I still may play the man
Whether I turns east or west.
I'd sooner that it were east, ye know,
To Blighty and my gal Sue;
I'd sooner be there, wi' the gold in 'er 'air
And the skies be'ind all blue.
But still I pray I may do my bit,
And then, if I must turn west,
I'll be unashamed
When my name is called
And I'll find a soldier's rest.

(G.A. Studdert Kennedy)
